Friday 22/8 A day at the zoo

And again, a late start to the day. What´s new? We ate and then we headed out...to the zoo! I always have great times going to the zoo, and it´s also a real fantastic thing that the three of us do together. Also, it´s a nice non-touristy place to go. I mean, how many people (apart from us) want to go to another city or country and go to the zoo?

We caught the metro over to the port area once more. It was only a short walk from there. The weather was really hot as we were walking but by the time we reached the zoo gates the clouds had all covered over, with a full sheet of grey. The temperature cooled a bit and it was really threatening to rain down on us. Oh well.

We had taken with us a litre and a half worth of sangria, split into 500ml water bottles that each of us carried with us. We thought it might be fun to get a bit drunk or at least boozed up slightly during the day. We saw an info place on the gorillas, there since the zoo until a few years ago had an albino gorilla, Snowflake. We saw...well, basically a whole lot of animals, many not quite worthy of description here on the blogoweb.

Some highlights though, were turtles (in many different varieties). I love turtles, and really like the giant turtles, like those galapagos ones. I think turtles might be my favourite animals. There were some freaky american ones and there were also some normal but small ones in the reptile house. I stayed there watching them for a while and kinda skipped past through the snakes part.

Turtles!

Giant turtle...awesome

Wierd freaky turtles

The dolphins were also cool, seeing them from below. They were just swimming around and around. The enclosure was a bit crappy though. The sea lions were also really cool. They were swimming around and laying on a big rock in the middle of their enclosure. They made odd noises, but they seem to be so similar to dogs in their nature.

We finished our sangria and bought some Estrella beer and some popcorn, and went to see the dolphin show. It wasn´t all that great, plus we couldn´t understand the Catalan that the guy was speaking. He did some of the flips and that sort of stuff, and he rode them a bit. It was raining heavily by this point and we were under two umbrellas and sitting on wet seats at the enclosure, munching away on popcorn and sipping our beers.

Emma had sat on her bag so that she wouldn´t get wet. I didn´t mind and just sat, getting a wet butt. It would dry. Her bag though got soaked, including things inside. Our TimeOut guide was a bit water logged =( and so were the maps and everything. After the show we did a bathroom stop and I think Em was using the hand dryer to dry herself and her bag, for a long while.

We went and saw the big cats; quite cool. On our way back to the exit we went past the hippos once more but this time the two in their enclosure were coming right up to the fence, letting people pet their snouts. I have never ever seen anything like it. I mean, it´s probably not great because it means that they have just been conditioned to get fed by people, but it was really amazing. What incredible creatures.

We also hit up the children´s playground, all wanting to go on a slide that we saw. We had to move through the whole jungle gym thing in order to get around to it, but it was worth it when we did get to go down.

Back at the hostel we ate dinner and then headed up to join people for drinks on the roof. We went out again with everyone, starting at another bar where we got a free shot of some random mix of spirits on entry. It was cool. It was just the three of us and the Finnish guy who were dancing though. Everyone else must have thought they were too cool to move their bodies to Michael Jackson.

We headed then, the four of us and another American guy, to Side Car, an indie club. It was an awesome place. The music was good and entry was only seven euros, including a free beer. We stayed for a couple hours before Emma was slightly under the weather and we needed to head home. During all the dancing Emma´s bag strap finally gave way and broke. Good effort; it lasted almost two years.

We took a couple taxis and got back to the hostel. I just crashed, being slightly drunk myself, and just very tired too.
