We caught a relatively early train and made our way up towards Madrid. The trip wasn't too bad; it was also our very last train ride for our grand adventure in Europe. Awww, tears (no, not really). The station in Madrid had a very cool indoor garden. I wondered how we were able to completely miss that last time we were there (well, it was at stupid o'clock in the morning).
We got in and made our way to our hostel. It was quite easy, and was nearby to the station closest to us, Anton Martin. Our hostel, Mad, was quite cool. They had weird wristbands for keys. The rooms were very small and the locks slightly hard to open, but overall it was a really nice hostel, with a great little courtyard area outside our room, and a nice funky shared communal area downstairs.
Em and I went to find a store to buy some snacks and some food; we were both a tad hungry. We cooked up some instance noodles, and at some point Steve appeared. Steve is Emma's friend from medicine who was originally going to travel the whole trip with us. We all got set and then headed out for a walk.
I think we were trying to find a tapas place, or some certain bar. We first walked through Plaza Mayor, a centre of touristness.
We got slightly lost getting to the place we were trying to find (well, they got lost. I was just walking with them).
But, we eventually found our way to the bar. It was a funky little place, full of smoke, with youngish folks and packed to the brim. We stayed for a while, drinking sangria and beer. Somehow we managed (well, Emma did) to get us some tapas, in the form of bruscetta and tuna.
We headed back to the hostel and did some dinner. Steve was tired and decided to get an early night. Em and I on the other hand headed out to a busy nightlife area. Everyone was out in the streets drinking. We didn't really realise what people meant when they told us that they go out late at night here. We decided to go into a place, and it was okay but kind of expensive and there wasn't really a dance floor.
So, we went out and just asked some locals. That's really the way to do things. They invited us to come along with them, and so that's what we did. We stayed for a while on the street and drank, and then we headed off with them to a bar nearby.
The place was good fun. Good music and lots of dancing. They even played La Casa Azul, which everybody got very much into. It was great.
