Saturday 7/6 Exploring Jerusalem

Being shabbat, most things in the city were closed. At least, any tourist stuff to do was shut for the day, so it left us with a reduced number of possible things to do for the day. We decided to walk through and do the markets properly.

We started down David Street. Very touristy, very cheesy. Lots of cheap looking stuff, stupid t-shirt designs (seen in every second store), and many, many store-keepers trying to pull you into their store. It was fun, I suppose, since we weren´t intending on buying anything. If you don't want anything, you can*t get dragged into the store and forced to play the game.

On our way through we bought a couple of what looked like doughnuts covered in icing sugar. After we gave the nice man his money and he gave us our baked goods we headed out through Damascus Gate and found a quiet shady spot to sit down, drink some water and enjoy our acquisition. The doughnuts turned out to be similar to a hamentashen, shaped as a ring. They were pretty good.

We walked back through the gate and retraced our path back in the direction of our hostel. On the way I couldn't resist and I bought some real turkish delight from one of the numerous sweets stores that were in the markets. I bought a red one, a lighter one, and some soft nougat.

Turkish delight #1

We got back up to Jaffa Gate, bought some cold meat and had a small picnic lunch.

We went into a nearby ally leading to a nice little café. We initially went there because it claimed to offer free internet. It didn't lie as such but their wifi router was upstairs and the signal didn't quite reach our little Ozy down below. Oh well. We each got a cappuccino while we were sitting there. Aaron, a Canadian guy who we*d met the night before when he leant us a lighter for cooking, also had popped in there so we chatted for a while. After he left we had a nice long phone conversation with Dad.

We stayed sitting there for a bit and then headed back to the hostel where we discovered we could get wifi from our room! Joy. We thought we should use our internet time to try get our flickr uploader to work or find some other way of getting photos online. To cut a long story short, we discovered that the photo viewer in-built on Ozy had such a function built in but said function was lost from the program*s menu due to a software upgrade (go figure). We did some quick sneaky Linux code tweaking (thank you open source Linux stuff) and huzzah, it worked!! It doesn*t need to be said that both Em and I were completely and utterly overjoyed. We spent the rest of the night getting our Egypt photos up and doing up our blogs for Egypt.
