Friday 20/6 Top Deck day 6 – Mykonos to Santorini

This was bound to be a day just of travel. Our ferry was only meant to leave early afternoon and we had to head out to the port by about 2pm.

After we got up and ready we headed back into town. We were on a mission. The Chaucer book that we were reading yesterday was something that we decided we had to have. I think it´s the perfect book to say we picked up in some random internet café in Mykonos.

When we got there we went straight to the place and paid two euros to the owner for the book. It was a take and leave sort of deal usually so we had offered to pay him outright for it. I don't know if he thought he was getting a good deal out of it (he looked like he wanted to maybe make something from the transaction) but we thought we got a decent price for a good old book.

We also picked up a 2-gig SD card to be used as a backup for cameras running empty on space, and also as a hard drive for Ozy. Ozy, although he´s meant to have a few gigs of space, has somehow seem to become depleted of said space.

We bussed back to the hotel and eventually got picked up by a bus to go to the port. The boat was late by about half an hour, and we ended waiting in a small departure area outside (but partly under shade) for a long while.

The ferry was similar to the one we caught to Mykonos but the trip was almost four hours long. I mostly just listened to music to keep myself occupied, while Emma mad a small dent into the Canterbury Tales.

Finally at our destination, we disembarked and caught buses to the hotel. The port at Thira, Santorini (Thira is the main town) is located at the bottom of quite a steep cliff. The road leading up is a zig-zag which gives spectacular views as you go up.

Long and lonely road

The hotel, Hellas, was quite nice, a little family owned shindig with decent rooms and a nice pool. When we arrived and got into our rooms and then chilled for a bit. A few people in the room next to us were sitting and eating pumpkin seeds so we hung out for a bit outside. We called London and spoke to Dani and Mum for a bit. Very cool.

We then headed off across the road to have a dinner at a local taverna. The service was a bit slow but we kept ourselves busy with tatziki and bread, and drinks. Em and I shared dishes of masouka and stuffed tomatos and peppers. Was very nice.

Dinner only finished at 11 or a bit later so we didn't go out afterwards. Instead, we popped back to someone´s room for a short while to look at photos and that sort of thing.
