Thursday 31/7 Finishing off Paris

So, our fourth day and only a few things left for us to get done. We got up but not quite as early as the previous days. We started to make our way over to the Eiffel Tower. The trip there (well, the route that we took) involved switching from the metro to the RER service, a bit different from the metro trains.

We got to the tower, following the stream of tourists heading in that direction, and the cameras came out. We didn´t go up this time since we´d done it before and the lines looked at least an hour to get to the ticket desks. Instead, we took a bunch of photos.

Crowded Eiffel Tower

We walked over the bridge nearby to get a better view, then took some photos there.

Me and the tower

We spent a good 20 minutes doing jumping photos in front of the tower, trying to get it right. We got a few good shots out of it but it took ages because we were all jumping out of synch with each other. And the ground was a bit wet and muddy!

We kept walking down towards buildings and found ourselves a metro station. From there we made our way to the Lachese cemetery. Before we went in we found one of those free public toilette box things. I braved it first, trying how the hell to get the door to shut and then how to get it to flush. I know they wanted it to all be automated but couldn´t they just have a flush button like normal people?

We walked through the cemetery towards the grave of Jim Morrison. The place was generally very beautiful. There were lots of family tombs and the whole place was covered in the green of moss, vines, and an encompassing canopy of the trees. There was a nice green light from it all that bathed the path.

Jim Morrison´s grave was quite small and ordinary. Moreso than I had expected. There were flowers, letters, candles and even a pack of cigarettes there. There were a bunch of people there, paying there respects or simply being tourists and snap-shotting it.

We walked to the central area where the cremated bodies were laid to rest. The grave of Max Earnst was there but was plain, small and simple. I think Dani had wanted to see a bit more for him there.

Close by was the third grave we had wanted to see; Oscar Wilde. His grave was an amazing monument with a winged sphinx figure on the front. What was more amazing is that it was completely covered in kisses (with lipstick). There were, of course, some scribbles by idiots, defacing the thing, but the lipstick marks were just...wow. Of course, all three or us put on a bit of lip gloss and left our own marks.

Oscar Wilde´s resting place

We left the cemetery and headed back to the hostel. On the way we stopped by the bakery near us and got some quiche for lunch. Em and I had tuna and Dani had veges. For dessert we had the most amazing piece of custard and cherry tart in existence. Truly incredible.

We spent a while doing some washing at a Laundromat slightly down the road, typing some blogs while we were waiting.

Blogging and waiting for laundry, watching the spinning machines

For dinner we went to a nearby French restaurant where we got couscous. It came in a large platter piled high with the stuff and a few slabs of butter on top, to be melted. The platter sat on a dish with the veges, which were cooked very nicely in a soup. Em and I also had some chicken with it, which came on a separate plate. What amazing food. Very tasty.

We went back to the hostel bar and had a few pre-drinks before we finally made our way out to get to Triptyche, the club we wanted to hit up while we were in Paris.

Having some drinks before heading out

We caught the metro over to the area that the club was in. During the trip we saw a few young looking people who were dressed like they might be going to the same place we were. That was cool, I thought. This meant that maybe this place was pretty decent, and that locals were all for it, too. The girls took photos of them.

We got off the metro and looked for our way to the place. It seems the people that we rode with got off with us and also were looking around for how to get there. They turned out to be Norwegians, also in Paris on holiday, and also looking for a decent indie venue. Hah, what luck.

We went with them to the club and inside we all had drinks at some seats. The night was pretty good. The music was decent, although a bit more electro over indie, than we would have preferred. It was okay though. We danced a bit and drank too.

At Social Club bar

On our way home we tried to walk it a bit but it turned out to be far, far too long to go. We caught a cab back. It seemed like the cab driver was taking us a very weird and long route but we did get there eventually and the price wasn´t that bad.
